Lutron Caseta vs RA2 Select: Which Smart Lighting System Is Right for Your Home?
Published March 2026 • By Unity Power & Light
When homeowners in Aiken ask us about smart lighting, we consistently recommend Lutron over every other smart switch brand on the market. Lutron's reliability, build quality, and radio technology are simply in a different class. But Lutron offers two residential systems that serve different needs and budgets: Caseta and RA2 Select. Understanding the differences between them is essential for choosing the right system for your home.
This guide compares the two platforms head-to-head across every factor that matters: device limits, switch options, keypads, hub requirements, pricing, installation complexity, and the situations where each system makes the most sense.
Lutron Caseta: The Accessible Starting Point
Caseta is Lutron's entry-level smart lighting system, designed to be accessible to homeowners and relatively straightforward to install. It launched in 2014 and has become the best-selling smart lighting system in North America, which speaks to its reliability and ease of use.
Device limit: 75 devices per hub. A "device" includes every switch, dimmer, plug-in module, and remote. For a typical home with 30 to 40 light switches, 75 devices provides comfortable headroom. For larger homes or homes where you want to control every switch, fan, and shade, 75 can feel limiting.
Hub: The Caseta Smart Bridge (standard) or Smart Bridge Pro. The standard bridge works with the Lutron app, Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. The Pro bridge adds Telnet integration for third-party home automation systems like Hubitat, Home Assistant, and Control4. Both hubs connect to your router via Ethernet cable.
Switch styles: Caseta uses the Pico remote as its wall switch interface. The switches have a distinctive look with rounded buttons and an integrated dimmer bar. While functional and well-designed, the Caseta aesthetic is recognizably different from traditional Decora-style switches. Some homeowners love the look; others find it conspicuously "smart home."
Neutral wire: Not required. This is a major advantage for older homes in Aiken that were wired without neutral wires in the switch boxes. Caseta switches work without a neutral wire, which eliminates the most common barrier to smart switch installation in pre-2000 homes.
Pico remotes: Caseta's Pico remotes are small, battery-powered controllers that can be mounted anywhere with a wall plate. They function as 3-way switches (without running new wire), scene controllers, or standalone remotes. Picos are one of Caseta's strongest features and are used extensively as virtual 3-way switches.
Price per switch: Approximately $50 to $65 per dimmer switch, including a Pico remote and wall plate. The Smart Bridge hub costs approximately $100 to $130. A complete starter kit with one bridge, two dimmers, and two Picos runs around $200.
Lutron RA2 Select: The Professional Upgrade
RA2 Select is positioned between Caseta and RadioRA 3 (Lutron's high-end residential system). It was designed for professional installation and offers capabilities that Caseta cannot match, particularly in switch aesthetics, keypad options, and system capacity.
Device limit: 100 devices per system. This is a meaningful increase over Caseta's 75, and for larger homes, it can make the difference between fitting everything on one system or running out of capacity.
Hub: The RA2 Select Main Repeater serves as the system hub. Unlike Caseta's consumer-friendly bridge, the RA2 Select repeater is designed for professional configuration. Programming is done through Lutron's dealer software, not the consumer app. This means initial setup requires an electrician or integrator trained on the platform, but the result is a more polished, more capable system.
Switch styles: RA2 Select supports Lutron's Sunnata paddle switches, which look and feel like premium traditional Decora switches. The Sunnata line has a clean, architectural aesthetic that blends seamlessly with existing Decora-style switches and plates. For homeowners who want smart lighting without the "smart home look," Sunnata switches are a significant upgrade over Caseta's button-style switches.
Keypads: This is RA2 Select's standout advantage. The system supports Sunnata keypads, which are multi-button wall controllers that can trigger scenes, control rooms, or manage individual lights. A keypad at the front door can have buttons programmed for "Welcome Home," "Good Night," "All Off," and "Movie Night." Caseta has Pico remotes but no true keypads with engraved labels and dedicated scene buttons.
Neutral wire: Not required for most RA2 Select devices. Like Caseta, the system works without neutral wires, maintaining compatibility with older Aiken homes.
Price per switch: Approximately $80 to $120 per switch, depending on the specific model. Keypads are $150 to $250 each. The main repeater costs approximately $350 to $500. The overall system cost is roughly 50% to 100% more than a comparable Caseta installation.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Aesthetics: RA2 Select wins decisively. Sunnata paddle switches look like upscale traditional switches. Caseta switches are functional but visually distinctive, which some homeowners find appealing and others find jarring next to traditional switches in rooms where not every switch is replaced.
Keypads and scenes: RA2 Select wins. True keypads with engraved buttons are a transformative feature for whole-home lighting control. Caseta's Pico remotes can trigger scenes, but they lack the polish and clarity of dedicated keypad buttons.
Device capacity: RA2 Select wins with 100 devices versus 75. For homes with 50 or more controlled devices, this difference matters.
Ease of setup: Caseta wins. It is designed for consumer self-installation, with the Lutron app walking you through each device. RA2 Select requires professional programming through dealer software. This is not a disadvantage per se, but it means ongoing changes require either a service call or remote access by the installer.
DIY-friendliness: Caseta wins. Homeowners can add and reconfigure Caseta devices themselves through the app. RA2 Select changes typically require professional support, though basic operation (turning lights on and off, adjusting dimmer levels) is fully user-controlled.
Price: Caseta wins on cost. A whole-home Caseta installation is roughly half the cost of a comparable RA2 Select system. For budget-conscious homeowners, this is a significant factor.
Reliability: Tie. Both systems use Lutron's Clear Connect RF technology, which operates on a dedicated frequency band (434 MHz) separate from Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz). This means neither system is affected by Wi-Fi congestion, Bluetooth interference, or the other reliability issues that plague Wi-Fi-based smart switches. Both systems are rock-solid in daily use.
Integration: Essentially tied. Both work with Alexa, Google, Apple HomeKit, and major home automation platforms. Caseta Pro has a slight edge with its open Telnet protocol. RA2 Select integrates well with professional automation systems.
When to Choose Caseta
Caseta is the right choice for most Aiken homeowners. Here are the scenarios where it makes the most sense:
Budget is a primary concern. If you want smart lighting throughout your home without spending premium prices, Caseta delivers reliable smart control at the best value in the Lutron ecosystem.
You want to start small and expand. Caseta is perfect for homeowners who want to begin with a few switches and gradually add more over time. You can buy a starter kit, install it yourself or have us install it, and add devices at your own pace.
You value DIY control. If you want to reconfigure scenes, add devices, and adjust settings without calling an electrician, Caseta's app-based management gives you full control.
Your home has fewer than 50 controlled devices. If your home has 30 to 40 switches and you want smart control on most of them plus a few Pico remotes, Caseta's 75-device limit is more than adequate.
You do not care about switch aesthetics. If you are comfortable with Caseta's button-style switches (and many people genuinely like them), there is no reason to pay more for RA2 Select's Sunnata switches.
When to Choose RA2 Select
RA2 Select is the right choice for homeowners who want a more polished, more capable system. Here are the scenarios where it makes sense:
You want switches that blend with traditional decor. If your home has high-end finishes and you want smart switches that look like premium traditional switches, Sunnata paddles are the answer. They integrate seamlessly with existing Decora plates and switchgear.
You want keypads. If the idea of a single button by the front door that sets every light in the house to the perfect welcome-home scene appeals to you, RA2 Select's keypads make it possible. This feature alone justifies the upgrade for many homeowners.
Your home is large. Homes with more than 50 light switches, ceiling fans, and shades benefit from RA2 Select's higher device limit. If you want comprehensive control of a 4,000+ square foot home, 75 devices may not be enough.
You are building or remodeling. New construction and major remodels are the ideal time to install RA2 Select because the professional programming cost is a small fraction of the overall project. You get a polished system from day one without the incremental approach that Caseta encourages.
You want whole-home lighting scenes. While Caseta supports scenes, RA2 Select's keypad-driven scene control is more intuitive and more powerful. "Good Night" on a bedside keypad that dims the hallway to 10%, turns off the kitchen, arms the exterior lights, and sets the bedroom to reading level is a daily luxury once you have it.
What About RadioRA 3?
Lutron's RadioRA 3 is their premium residential system, positioned above RA2 Select. It supports up to 200 devices, offers additional switch styles and keypad configurations, and integrates with motorized shades and HVAC systems. RadioRA 3 is typically specified by architects and interior designers for custom homes and major renovations.
For most Aiken homeowners, RadioRA 3 is more system than necessary. If you are building a custom home with a specific vision for whole-home lighting, shade, and audio control, RadioRA 3 is worth considering. For the vast majority of existing homes and typical new construction, Caseta or RA2 Select covers the need at a more accessible price point.
Installation: What We Do
Unity Power & Light installs both Caseta and RA2 Select systems. For either platform, our installation includes:
System design: We assess your home's wiring, identify which switches to replace, plan 3-way and 4-way configurations using Pico remotes (eliminating the need for traveler wires), and recommend the right system based on your needs and budget.
Professional installation: We remove existing switches, install Lutron dimmers and switches, configure the hub, set up the app on your phone, and program scenes. For RA2 Select, we handle all professional programming through the dealer software.
Testing and walkthrough: We test every switch, verify dimming performance with your existing light fixtures (LED compatibility is important), and walk you through daily operation, voice assistant integration, and scene control.
Whether you choose Caseta or RA2 Select, you are getting the most reliable smart lighting system available. The choice between them comes down to aesthetics, keypads, device count, and budget.
