Emergency exit signs and egress lighting are life safety systems that every commercial building is required to have by South Carolina building code. When power fails during a fire or other emergency, these systems provide the illumination and directional guidance that building occupants need to evacuate safely. Unity Power & Light installs, tests, and maintains emergency and exit lighting systems for commercial properties throughout Aiken, SC -- ensuring your building meets code requirements and your occupants are protected.
We see too many commercial buildings where emergency lighting batteries have died, exit sign lamps have burned out, or testing has never been performed. These are not minor maintenance oversights -- they are life safety failures that put people at risk and expose property owners to significant liability. Our installation and maintenance services keep your systems working when they are needed most.
What We Install
Exit Signs
LED illuminated exit signs with internal battery backup that provides a minimum of 90 minutes of operation during power failure. We install edge-lit, surface-mount, and recessed models to match your building's aesthetic. All units meet UL 924 standards and provide the required 6-inch letter height visible from 100 feet.
Emergency Egress Lighting
Dedicated emergency lighting fixtures -- the familiar wall-mounted units with adjustable lamp heads -- that illuminate corridors, stairways, and exit paths during power failures. Battery-backed units provide 90 minutes of illumination at a minimum of 1 foot-candle at floor level along the entire egress path.
Emergency Ballast Kits
For a cleaner look, emergency ballasts can be installed inside standard light fixtures. These internal units switch the fixture to battery power when normal power is lost, providing emergency illumination from the building's standard lighting fixtures rather than from dedicated emergency units.
Combination Units
Combination exit sign and emergency lighting fixtures provide both the directional signage and the path illumination in a single unit. These are commonly used above exit doors where both an exit sign and egress lighting are needed in the same location.
Testing and Maintenance
Code requires regular testing of all emergency lighting and exit signs. Many building owners are unaware of these requirements, and non-compliance is one of the most common findings in fire marshal inspections.
We offer testing and maintenance as a standalone service or as part of a comprehensive commercial electrical maintenance contract. Maintenance contract customers receive scheduled testing at the required intervals with no need to remember or schedule individual visits.
ADA Compliance
The Americans with Disabilities Act adds requirements beyond standard building code. We install ADA-compliant tactile exit signs with raised letters and Braille adjacent to exit doors, visual alarm notification appliances (strobes) where required, and emergency lighting along wheelchair-accessible egress routes. Compliance with both building code and ADA is necessary, and we ensure your installation meets both sets of requirements.
New Construction & Tenant Buildouts
For new commercial construction and tenant buildouts, we design emergency and exit lighting layouts that comply with code and provide optimal coverage. We work from architectural plans to identify all required locations, specify appropriate fixture types, and coordinate installation with the overall electrical and construction schedule. All installations are completed before the certificate of occupancy inspection, and we provide the testing documentation needed for approval.
